In today’s fast-paced and evolving world, young students are as fascinated by foreign education as they are by international brands and gadgets. The current generation recognizes the significant role that education has played in the development of Western countries. Perhaps this is why, after graduating from a good school, many students now prefer to pursue their undergraduate studies abroad, while some choose to go for postgraduate programs after completing their degree in India.

There are several reasons for this growing trend—advanced and innovative educational approaches, state-of-the-art laboratories equipped with the latest technology, world-class faculty, opportunities to earn while studying, and the promise of excellent salaries after graduation. Due to these and many other advantages, an increasing number of students prioritize studying abroad for their higher education.

The number of Marathi students opting for international education is also on the rise. A significant proportion of these students come from middle-class or upper-middle-class families. Their parents, who are either employed or running businesses, are often financially capable of supporting their child’s education abroad. However, both parents and students aspire to secure a scholarship or fellowship to help with expenses. The good news is that international students do have access to numerous scholarships. Unfortunately, due to a lack of awareness or improper planning, many talented students miss out on scholarships or tuition fee waivers and end up placing a financial burden on their parents. With proper information and strategic planning, students and parents can choose the right university and minimize costs effectively.

Studying abroad requires thorough and early planning. Many Indian students travel abroad for postgraduate studies, but the number of students going overseas for undergraduate degrees is also increasing. Among postgraduate students going abroad, the majority come from science and engineering backgrounds, followed by students from medical, pharmacy, management, and arts fields. Engineering students, in particular, are more aware of higher education opportunities abroad and often begin their preparations as early as their third year of undergraduate studies. Many of them plan to pursue a PhD after completing their master’s degree abroad, which is a well-thought-out decision.

The United States remains the most preferred destination for higher education, but the UK and other European countries also offer excellent academic opportunities. Moreover, students from diverse fields—not just engineering—can explore multiple study options abroad, whether for a master’s or a PhD. The same applies to undergraduate education. Studying abroad immediately after the 12th grade is often easier and more beneficial. In fact, undergraduate students tend to receive more scholarships compared to postgraduate students, making international education an attractive option even for bachelor’s degrees.
